Webinars

International Association of Veterinary Social Workers (IAVSW) webinar series: The World of Why Around Peer Support in Veterinary Medicine, July 25, 2024. Co-led with Susan Swendson Harris, MSSW,LCSW, VSW.  https://iavsw.org/

The story of the mental health needs of persons in veterinary care settings has been well-documented through the high incidence of suicidality, burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress. While targeted mental health care and psychoeducation for veterinary professionals has become more readily available, there is still a gap in ones who access care. Peer supporters play a vital role in a multitude of health care settings, including in a multi-disciplinary approach in veterinary spaces. Together, we explore the many crucial functions of a veterinary peer supporter, and how these can be readily incorporated into animal care settings. We address the journey that many animal caregivers take in becoming compassionate advocates and helpers to their fellow veterinary professionals, and explore further the challenges and opportunities that peer support provides as we close the gap in mental health service utilization.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of:

    • The SAMHSA guidelines defining peer support as a core pillar in trauma-informed care models of service delivery systems, and its applicability in veterinary care settings.
    • Veterinary programs that incorporate peer support as a critical component to address the mental health needs of animal care professionals
    • The variety of pathways that veterinary care professionals currently take in becoming peer supporters
